1. What’s your story? Where are you from?

Hi, I am 葉思佑 Yesyo Yeh and I am from Taiwan. Taiwan is a small island and a democratic country in the east part of Asia. I live in the capital of Taiwan, which is Taipei city. It’s a colorful and prosperous city, and the scenery of the city surely influences me a lot.

我是葉思佑Yesyo Yeh, 來自台灣、台北市。城市裡複雜的元素, 顏色以及活力都影響著我。

2. Tell us about your aesthetic.

My drawings often involve surrealistic creatures and fantastical scenery. I like to put colorful and plentiful materials in my work.

I am a designer and an illustrator, therefore I often adjust my drawings accordingly to different clients. I have designed advertising graphics for numerous established brands. Some of the companies that I worked with before include Ogilvy, Wunderman Thompson, Colgate, Kleenex, IKEA, Chunghwa Telecom, and Gogoro.

3. What is your favourite medium and why?

Most of my works were painted with Wacom drawing tablets. Digital works are space-saving and easy to modify.

4. What is your artistic process like?

It’s kind of like a design process. I like to find the problem, and use my work to solve it. For example, I am designing a poster, which is an annual presentation for a non-profit organization. Besides, considering the drawing and the story, I find mailing posters will be a big problem. But if I can find a way to fold the poster in a clever way, the problem will be solved. Therefore, these two elements “folding” and “illustration” will be the main idea of this artwork.

5. Who and/or what inspires your work?

Everything in my life and my cat guagua! I like reading, studying strange things, ghost stories, history, fantasy, science fiction, sociology, human rights etc. All of these become my inspiration.

6. What role does art play in your life? How does it change the way you view the world?

For now, art is a big part of my life. Because I am a workaholic, I am always thinking about what I want to draw. There isn’t enough time LOL.

7. Where did you study?

I graduated from the National Chengchi University College of Communication. It’s not a design school, but knowing people with different advantages helps me a lot.

8. Where do you see yourself in five years?

Well, I have been working for seven years and working as a freelancer for five years. I’m quite satisfied with my life now. In five years, I would like to be a little more famous in my profession and find a better balance between life and work.

9. What about in ten?

I would like to have my own place, with a sunny balcony. I hope I’m always enthusiastic and feel satisfied with my work.

10. What do you hope to achieve with your art?

I hope people feel related to my work. And I’ll work harder to talk about Taiwan, democracy and all the issues I care about.

11. Now, tell us a little more about you as a person: what is your favourite food?

I love McNuggets a lot LOL.

麥當勞雞塊 🙂 🙂

12. Favourite book?

Ummm, it’s difficult to choose one favorite book. I think it’ll be the picture book Rabbits Can Can. And I would like to talk a little more about Rabbits Can Can. It’s painted by a famous Japanese mangaka Abe Yaro before he got famous. He believed that if he can paint one hundred rabbits a year, he can surely become a mangaka. But after he painted more than three thousand rabbits in one year, it still took him five more years to become a mangaka. Thankfully he made it!

13. Favourite genre of music?

Well, it changes a lot due to my mood.

14. What are your hobbies?

I like to take care of my plants. And I like cooking and baking!

15. If you weren’t an artist, what would you be?

Maybe a project manager, I love to organize things and make schedules!

應該會是個PM吧,我滿喜歡規劃和安排事情,並讓一切井井有條 (桌子就不一定了)!
