1. What’s your story? Where are you from?

My name is Yadi Liu. I am an NYC based visual artist who came from Sichuan, China. In my sophomore year, a commission from VOGUE made me decide to become an illustrator. Then after years of building my artistic voice, I came to the United States to study at FIT and have been making art and living there since then.

2. Tell us about your aesthetic.

My abstract style is characterized by curvy shapes and strong, vibrant colors. I am passionate about finding the optimum balance between illustration and Modern Art. I genuinely believe that real art only comes from honest feelings. I have been trying to record my emotions and explore the truth of life through art. I use my female perspective to explore and understand the beauty of women. In my opinion, women are like water. They can softly nourish the land; they can be strong enough to destroy obstacles and reflect a beautiful fantasy. I made that flexibility as fluid shapes, blending with stunning curves in my art.

3. What is your favourite medium and why?

I love the chalk pastel and vector pen tool of PS or AI. The chalk pastel gives me a sensation of touch and allows me to express my emotions more delicately and energetically. Not only does pastel gives me the freedom to vent my feelings on the paper, but it also stimulates my senses, especially when it sometimes breaks as if this results from the conflicts in my art. And I also enjoy adjusting the pen tool when I am working on my digital image. It makes me really dig into the shape of beauty without thinking about anything else.

4. What is your artistic process like?

I make the mood board and palette first, depending on the project type. Then, I draw the sketch on my Ipad Pro. After that, I airdrop my sketch to my computer for the digital work creation.

5. Who and/or what inspires your work?

My inspirations come from many different aspects, including womanhood, dreams, and relationships. These aspects have constructed a woman’s self-consciousness and connection to the world.

6. What role does art play in your life? How does it change the way you view the world?

Art plays a significant role in my life. It gives me the ability to transform emotions into physical work. What’s more interesting is that art and life strengthen each other. Through art, I can experience the real world more sensitively. I can also convert different situations in life into art. For example, through the eyes of art, people can find the beauty in sad things.  The accompany of art has been adding more dimensions and experiences into my life.

7. Where did you study?

I graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York with an MFA degree in illustration. I did my undergraduate study at Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in China.

8. Where do you see yourself in five years?

I will continue to work on illustration and create more works, doing more projects related to editorial, advertising, branding, and murals. I will also combine graphic design with illustrations to explore more possibilities of using my artistic voice in different forms.

9. What about in ten?

I will turn to the field of Fine Art but will still be making illustrations. I would love to try something more related to pure abstraction and self-expression.

10. What do you hope to achieve with your art?

By continually knowing from myself, I keep exploring and do artworks that can always represent “me” as I grow up.

11. Now, tell us a little more about you as a person: what is your favourite food?

Salmon sashimi and Spicy hop-pot!

12. Favourite book?

White by Kenya Hara.

13. Favourite genre of music?

Too many of them, as I kinda love everything. But recently I listen to a lot of Lo-fi Hip-hop music when I’m working. So chill and relaxing.

14. What are your hobbies?

Go to museums or galleries. Or reading something about history and philosophy.

15. If you weren’t an artist, what would you be?

Honestly, I can’t live without art. I would definitely be a curator at a museum.  I really enjoy the feeling of being surrounded by art. Even if I cannot become an artist, I hope that the beautiful art can be seen by more people and kept immortal.
