1. What’s your story? Where are you from?

My name is Akane Tomita. I’m from Tokyo, Japan. I have liked drawing illustrations so much since I was a child. Papers and pencils were my best toys. I made a small house made with cardboard and I continued drawing on the wall. I graduated Tama art University in Japan. I am working as an art teacher in Jr high school and high school now. To be an art teacher was one of my dreams, but I have also dreamed to be an illustrator. So I am studying the technique and method of illustration at Aoyama-juku(青山塾) in Japan now.

2. Tell us about your aesthetic.

For my illustration, the contrast of brightness and darkness is the most important thing. It gives us high impression because this technique is suitable for illustration. Also, the composition is essential. I like drawing figures in the landscape. I choose the composition carefully to make relationships between figures and the landscape.

3. What is your favourite medium and why?

I like painting with acrylic gouache because I can express both mat texture like oil painting and light texture like watercolor painting with it. Recently, my personal studying is the blurring of colors. The moment when a bright color and dark color are mixed, borderline is blurred is so interesting.

4. What is your artistic process like?

At first, I decide the concept of illustration. And then, draw a rough sketch. I often refer some photograph which I took but I add or deform something. Next, I paint with monochrome for the design of brightness and darkness. Finally, I paint with colors.

5. Who and/or what inspires your work?

The figures in my work are often inspired by Ukiyo-e(Japanese traditional printing). And, the works of Andrew Wyeth, especially watercolors, inspire my style which has high contrast.

私の描く人物は、日本の浮世絵に影響されていると思います。また、強いコントラストを好むのは、Andrew Wyethの影響です。特に彼の水彩画が好きです。

6. What role does art play in your life? How does it change the way you view the world?

I’d like to tell people about how I see the world through my illustrations. When I find out the world is a little strange, I feel happy. I want other people to get same kind of feelings. For getting this role, I focus my feelings as well as the technique of the illustration.

7. Where did you study?

I majored metal craft at Tama art University in Tokyo, Japan. And now I’m studying illustration at Aoyama-juku in Tokyo. Metal crafts and illustration are different genre, but both of them are very important for me. Now,I make more illustrations than metal crafts, but in the future, I’ll challenge artworks that collaborate them.
