1. What’s your story? Where are you from?

I was born in Iwate, Japan. In 2004, I began making sand art with shiny colorful sand called “SUNAE” and then I moved to Los Angeles in 2014. Here is a great place to enhance my knowledge in arts and a lot of great opportunities for artists!

2. Tell us about your aesthetic.

Surreal, Colorful and Pop!

3. What is your favourite medium and why?

Colored sand! SUNAE is very sensitive painting method. It can not modify color easily. However, when completed an artwork, feeling of accomplishment is amazing.

4. What is your artistic process like?

Sketching ideas → Draw art on a SUNAE-artboard, which is basically a sticker board on the surface→Cut out the lines according to the color scheme→Peel it off→Sprinkle the sand on the sticky surface (one color at a time) →Repeat→Finish!→Clean up the sand all over on the floor…

5. Who and/or what inspires your work?

Around my everyday life, such as music, manga, desserts and people.

6. What role does art play in your life? How does it change the way you view the world?

I used to be shy and not confident but everything changed after I started making art. Since 2007, I’ve been participating in a wide range of art projects/exhibits/workshops and met a lot of people, got great opportunities. These experiences give me a happy feeling, motivation and self-confident. I’m really happy to find something that I can be so passionate about.

7. Where did you study?

There were not SUNAE artists in class so I studied by myself. Spending so much time trying to make my art style better has established who I am as a SUNAE artist today.

8. Where do you see yourself in five years? Working in an agency?

Continuing to making art, showing it around the world. I hope to create an animation of my character in the near future! I love a freelance, communication with creative people, freedom and managing my own time.

9. What about in ten?

I would have my own studio and gallery shop!

10. What do you hope to achieve with your art?

For everyone to love SUNAE!

11. Now, tell us a little more about you as a person: what is your favourite food?

Chocolate, cake and ice cream… all of the desserts!

12. Favourite book?

Eisaku Kubonouchi’s manga and Kin Shiotani’s book.

13. Favourite genre of music?

Rock, Electoronic (sometimes Hip-Hop and Hard Rock.)

14. What are your hobbies?

Go to music concerts, read manga, watch comedy shows, listen to comedian radio. They make me smile and give me happiness, relaxation and motivation all the time!!!

15. If you weren’t an artist, what would you be?

Umm… I can’t imagine at all. Art is my life. But if I were born again, I would like to be a drummer!
