Hello, I live in South Korea. I’m Lee Hyun-Jeong who works as a freelance illustrator. I almost always work with colored pencils.

2. Tell us about your aesthetic.

My paintings make the viewer feel comfortable. The topic of my work is β€˜All my memories,’ which usually means empathy and familiarity with parents or daily life. So, I don’t usually use provocative colors. So when the viewer looks at my picture, I always focus on reminding them of their warm memories.

3. What is your favourite medium and why?

I usually use colored pencils, and I use Photoshop or Illustration programs to modify them as needed. But these days, I’ve started digital drawing with an iPad, and I love being able to modify and use a lot of different colors.

4. What is your artistic process like?

The process is only sketches and colors, but as you know, color pencils cannot be modified. So, when I sketch, I make a lot of corrections until I get the line I wan

5. Who and/or what inspires your work?

I got a lot of inspiration from my childhood memories or parents when I drew a family theme. And besides, I think I’m inspired by all the people I see, the movies, the objects, the scenery. In a way, inspiration begins all over the author’s own memories. For example, if you were inspired by a child on the road today, you would recall the time you were inspired when you work. That’s the inspiration that comes from memory.

6. What role does art play in your life? How does it change the way you view the world?

It’s the consolation I receive from everyday life. I am comforted, and someone is comforted through my paintings. Sometimes a day goes by meaninglessly, and sometimes special. Of course, sometimes it feels sad. So, all the comfort I get makes me keep challenging and expressing what I want.
