1. What’s your story? Where are you from?

Hi, my name is Cho Seon Jin. I’m working as an illustrator, and living in Seoul.
Growing up I always loved to draw, and now that I’m grown, fortunately I’m working as I wanted to be, with things that I love.

μ•ˆλ…•ν•˜μ„Έμš”, 제 이름은 쑰선진 μž…λ‹ˆλ‹€. μ €λŠ” ν•œκ΅μ—μ„œ μΌλŸ¬μŠ€νŠΈλ ˆμ΄ν„°λ‘œ ν™œλ™ν•˜κ³ μžˆκ³  μ„œμšΈμ— μ‚΄κ³  μžˆμ–΄μš”.

2. Tell us about your aesthetic.

I am everything about lines that are simple but accurate, and pure tones of color.
I feel beauty towards actual things rather than something being abstract, and strong emotions rather than lukewarm emotions.

3. What is your favourite medium and why?

Most of the time I work with digital tools like Adobe Photoshop, but my personal favourite is to draw directly on a sketchbook. I love the feeling of the pencil touching the paper.

4. What is your artistic process like?

I start with little pieces of a moment, such as a picture taken on a trip, a pleasant scenery that you run into sometimes, a scene from a sad movie that made you cry all over, and so on.Β I draw sketches or take notes of the emotions at that time, then develop them into an image.Β I have a huge interest in the combination of colors. I tend to use only two or three colors in one drawing, so I really focus on what colors I should go for, considering the impression that a color gives off or the color of the emotion I felt in a certain situation.Β I always pursue simplicity by using as few as colors.

5. Who and/or what inspires your work?

I think I get inspired by pretty much everything around my life. There are times, you know, when those not-so-special moments turn into something special. The feeling, space, atmosphere, situation of that specific moment – and those moments would just come one day, without a notice. It’s like finding an echo in your heart in a normal but dull daily life. Those things seem to inspire me, I think.

6. What role does art play in your life? How does it change the way you view the world?

I think that art is a way to express what’s inside of a creator’s mind. Like writers express themselves by writing and actors expressing themselves by acting. And I express myself, by drawing. So the art itself, is me. Myself. And sometimes it also works as a catalyst to bring out myself in change. This seems to make me reflect on myself within me.

8. Where do you see yourself in five years? Working in an agency?

I don’t think I would be in an agency. I’d probably be babbling with friends from all kinds of fields, sharing ideas in a small, petite studio, maybe. I think I’ll be still writing and drawing with those plenty contents of traveling, or simple daily lives.

10. What do you hope to achieve with your art?

I hope people can dream through my drawings. I hope they would dream of traveling when they see my painting of traveling, and hope they can think back of their childhood when they see my painting of little children. I really want to draw pictures that people can sympathize and have comfort on. The dullness of a daily life you pass everyday can be meaningful if you turn this moment into a drawing. It’s just a picture, but if it can spread the echo in people’s hearts, I would feel so grateful.
