1. What’s your story? Where are you from?

Hello. My name is Minji Kim, an illustrator in Korea. After graduating from university, I started my career as a freelance illustrator. I have been working in various fields such as publishing, package illustration, etc. for 10 years. I mainly paint what I think and feel in my daily life.

2. Tell us about your aesthetic.

As I said, my works are related to my daily life and experience. Ordinary memories, emotions and thoughts inspire me and the things I see, hear and feel become an idea. Therefore, my work reveals what I want to express and what I like.

3. What is your favourite medium and why?

I have been doing manual work since I was young and exposed to diverse tools like watercolors, drawing, oil painting, acrylic and colored pencils while preparing for the college entrance exam. It makes me familiar with a variety of materials and tools. I like most of them. But among them, the basic pen and pencil are my favorite tool. Unfortunately, Works are done digitally nowadays to achive the uniformity and storage of the paintings.

4. What is your artistic process like?

I usually try to express what I feel and think in my daily life. Various words and sentences that come to mind form images and I draw the painting by choosing the image that suits my mood of the day most. By actually portraying the image I choose, I can organise the complex thoughts in my head and feel refreshed. As time goes by, when you look back at the picture you drew, it brings back the feeling of painting. This is the driving force behind my creation.

5. Who and/or what inspires your work?

Everything inspires me. But these days, four seasons, nature and my family affect me most. Korea has four distinct seasons and I can feel them by drawing it. For example, Drawing nature such as grass and trees makes me feel I’m resting there. My dog named love appears at my work as an actress from time to time.

6. What role does art play in your life? How does it change the way you view the world?

Considering my working style, art is like eating, sleeping, breathing to me. It’s natural and one of the things that we have to handle in life. Also, contact with art make me look at the world without prejudice and from different angles. Because of art, I get the ability to observe and interpret things diversely.

I’ve been painting since I was young and learned animation and college entrance exam-related study at high school. In university, I studied architecture and visual design. After that, I started my career when I was 23 and there were many things I want to do. I worked in various places such as advertising, architecture, pattern-lust etc. These experiences help me continue my career.

I guess I’ll be working in the same field. I may learn other skills for more experience but I’ll continue my drawing like a habit. I’d like to work more on stories like fairy tales and webtoons and gain experience if there is a chance. Likewise, I hope to work with various countires in various fields.

10. What do you hope to achieve with your art?

Painting has always been a comfort to me and is one of the strengths I have. It is the way to express what I want to express. The more I draw, the more confident I am. I want to continue drawing with my own thoughts without being shaken by trivial things.

I don’t like the books that tell me what is right because the view differs for every people. Maybe that’s why I seem to prefer cloud-like content that I can’t get my hands on.  So my favorite book is “Twinkle Twinkle” by Kaori Ekuni. It shows love as it is without prejudice.

My hobbies are walking and watching videos. I take a walk almost every day. Thanks to my dog, I’m doing it semi-forced. It helps me organize my thoughts and have a calm mind. If you have something important or something to think about, you can get a solution as you take a walk. I watch movies, dramas and YouTube because I like to see various videos. 15. If you weren’t an artist, what would you be?

I never thought about this issue before. I think I might become a lawyer even though i’m not good at studying(lol). Being a person who fights and gives advice for others in trouble is what I want to be. And giving actual help, not volunteer work matters when choosing a job. I guess lawyer suits best for these conditions.
